What happened at Atrium Health that led to viral exposure?
According to WSOC-TV, “Atrium Health confirmed Thursday night [November 10, 2022] that certain cleaning and sanitization logs they require were not being accurately kept and because of that, they can’t verify that all of the necessary steps were taken to make sure equipment used in treatment was ready for patient use.”
What are the health risks of Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV?
All three of these viruses can be deadly.
- Hepatitis B is an incurable liver disease. Without treatment and management, it can result in liver failure and potentially death.
- Hepatitis C is a curable liver disease, but without treatment it can develop into liver failure and potentially death.
- HIV is an incurable disease affecting the body’s immune system. There are anti-viral medications which can manage the disease and make a person undetectable (meaning it cannot be spread), but if left untreated, it will develop into acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). HIV/AIDS increase the risk of infections, including pneumonia, tuberculosis, meningitis, certain cancers, and more.
These are highly communicable diseases, meaning patients at Atrium Health may have been unknowingly spreading these viruses for months. A class action lawsuit has already been filed.
