South Carolina catastrophic injury and mass tort lawyer, S. Randall (“Randy”) Hood, founding partner of McGowan, Hood, Felder & Phillips, LLC, has dedicated his legal career to helping those who have suffered serious injuries or lost loved ones because of someone else’s negligence. With over twenty years of experience helping injured people fight back against those who hurt them, he focuses his practice on representing individuals who have been catastrophically injured in a preventable accident or representing people who have been wronged by an act of a corporation on a large-scale basis.
His catastrophic injury practice includes people injured in a medical malpractice case, nursing home abuse/neglect situation, product liability case, tractor trailer collision or some other serious incident. The catastrophic injuries suffered by some of his clients have included traumatic brain injury, burn injury, paralysis, amputation, cerebral palsy and death. Hood also represents people who have suffered some type of injury due to wrongful conduct on behalf of a corporation or organized entity. This type of situation presents an opportunity for Hood to represent a class of individuals (class action) or many individual claims in a consolidated action against corporate entities (Multi District Litigation, or MDL).
Hood obtained his Undergraduate Degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and went on to attend the University Of South Carolina School Of Law. Upon graduation he began practicing in the area of personal injury with a law firm that would become known as McMehan, Weidner, Hood & Jackson. After five years with that firm he began practicing law with James C. Anders, P.A. and Associates until 2003. Hood and Chad McGowan then formed their current firm that would come to be known as McGowan, Hood, Felder & Phillips, LLC. The firm now has four offices with twenty lawyers and over thirty support staff located in the South Carolina communities of Rock Hill, Columbia, Sumter, and Anderson.

According to Hood, astonishingly, between 45,000 to 90,000 people every year die because of medical errors. Hood elaborates, “That is equivalent to two 747s crashing every day of the year. If two 747s crashed every day, the authorities would get the bottom of the problem and get it corrected, however, the problem with getting a handle on these medical fatalities is that it is such a decentralized process. You can have someone die in Buffalo, New York, New Orleans, Louisiana, and Billings, Montana of the same thing, but because they are not connected and because they are not in close proximity, the procedure or drug is not readily identified as the problem. Unfortunately, people die or are injured every day by a medical professional, pharmaceutical product, or medical device.”
Hood jokingly says, “My grandmother always told me I was either going to be a preacher, a disc jockey, or a lawyer because I never shut up. As a young child I would walk up to a stranger in the grocery store and engage them in conversation. I grew up in a middle class family and assumed I would find a local job. No one ever thought about a doctor or lawyer coming from our neighborhood. But, one day it struck me, ‘I can do this. I can become a lawyer.’ I also wanted to be able to provide the best for my daughter. So, that’s what I pursued and I made it.”
Hood continues, “My faith is a huge part of my success. There were circumstances in my life that have given me drive to never give up. I’m motivated every day by my faith, my daughter, my family, and some events that have occurred in my life. We all have choices and you can either choose to take the left path or the right path and hopefully it’s the one that’s best for you to become a productive member of society and a better person for your own benefit and for the benefit of those that are meaningful in your life. Fortunately, I have been blessed to take a path that has allowed me to make a positive influence.”
Honest South Carolina accident attorney who puts clients’ needs first
Hood’s firm has grown extensively since its formation causing them to be constantly on the lookout for talented lawyers who agree with their mission. Hood explains, “We file almost every case we receive, then we litigate it for the next eighteen months to two years. Then it either gets resolved or goes to trial. We have been very successful at getting our cases resolved favorably. All of our personal injury work is done on a contingency basis and we are very good at what we do. We offer a great service at a competitive price and we have achieved very good results for people. I will put our results against anyone. We are trial lawyers and we are not afraid to go to trial. Many lawyers don’t like to go to trial because it’s so expensive and time consuming, but we are very willing to take two or three weeks to go to trial if that is what it takes to get a favorable outcome for our client.” Hood personally handles about 20 to 25 cases annually and his firm handles between 250 to 300 cases per year.
Hood and his firm made a decision in 2003 to primarily use the internet to promote their business and spread their message. They now have almost ten years of infrastructure and search engine optimization in place. He comments, “We created Facebook pages four years ago and started blogging two years ago. We also recently created a comprehensive website called ‘pharminjury.com’ that will be as robust as our main website. It will be geared specifically to pharmaceutical injury and medical device injury. We have simply embraced the internet and all the opportunities it provides.” Additionally, Hood had one of the cases he litigated with the Anders Law Firm featured on the television program, Dateline.
Hood and his firm have also been involved in a variety of charitable efforts over the years. While much of their philanthropy is done anonymously, they have worked with organizations such as, Feed the Hungry, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, and the NAACP. They also buy fans in the summer months for those that need them, provide turkeys and hams for a lot of people in the Rock Hill area during Thanksgiving and Christmas, and have helped a local children’s home. Hood states, “We try to be good corporate citizens and help as many people as possible in our giving.”
Civic-minded personal injury attorney in Columbia, SC committed to clients
Hood recently completed his term as President of the South Carolina Association for Justice and now serves as the Immediate Past President of the organization. As one might expect, the voluntary position of President of an organization of 1,200 trial lawyers requires a tremendous amount of time, energy and sacrifice. Hood has spent a great deal of time in the South Carolina legislature to serve as an information source especially in regard to tort reform. In this role he was able to work on a bill over the past year that was passed almost unanimously in the house and the senate which will make South Carolina a safer place for patients. Prior to being President, he held progressive positions within the organization including editor of the South Carolina Trial Lawyer Magazine, Treasurer, Secretary, Vice-President, Incoming President, President, and now holds the title of Immediate Past President which continues to carry responsibilities.
Hood states, “Access to the courts is something we were guaranteed in the United States Constitution in the Seventh Amendment. When tort reform is enacted it affects fundamental rights that we have been guaranteed for the past 200 years. It’s my job and the job of other trial lawyers to stand up for everyone in society to ensure they have the justice they deserve. I feel I have the responsibility to fight for the rights of the less fortunate and make sure that further legislation is not passed to further prohibit access to the court for those that need it.”
To that end, Hood describes his firm, “We are a firm that helps people who have been horribly injured or died and help them receive justice that is available to them. It will not bring back their loved one or it will not give them their life back, but we can help them obtain financial resources to allow them to maximize the life that they now have. We have been able to accomplish this goal for a number of years and we plan to do this for a long time.”
