According to Hood, astonishingly, between 45,000 to 90,000 people every year die because of medical errors. Hood elaborates, “That is equivalent to two 747s crashing every day of the year. If two 747s crashed every day, the authorities would get the bottom of the problem and get it corrected, however, the problem with getting a handle on these medical fatalities is that it is such a decentralized process. You can have someone die in Buffalo, New York, New Orleans, Louisiana, and Billings, Montana of the same thing, but because they are not connected and because they are not in close proximity, the procedure or drug is not readily identified as the problem. Unfortunately, people die or are injured every day by a medical professional, pharmaceutical product, or medical device.”

Hood jokingly says, “My grandmother always told me I was either going to be a preacher, a disc jockey, or a lawyer because I never shut up. As a young child I would walk up to a stranger in the grocery store and engage them in conversation. I grew up in a middle class family and assumed I would find a local job. No one ever thought about a doctor or lawyer coming from our neighborhood. But, one day it struck me, ‘I can do this. I can become a lawyer.’ I also wanted to be able to provide the best for my daughter. So, that’s what I pursued and I made it.”

Hood continues, “My faith is a huge part of my success. There were circumstances in my life that have given me drive to never give up. I’m motivated every day by my faith, my daughter, my family, and some events that have occurred in my life. We all have choices and you can either choose to take the left path or the right path and hopefully it’s the one that’s best for you to become a productive member of society and a better person for your own benefit and for the benefit of those that are meaningful in your life. Fortunately, I have been blessed to take a path that has allowed me to make a positive influence.”

Hood’s firm has grown extensively since its formation causing them to be constantly on the lookout for talented lawyers who agree with their mission. Hood explains, “We file almost every case we receive, then we litigate it for the next eighteen months to two years. Then it either gets resolved or goes to trial. We have been very successful at getting our cases resolved favorably. All of our personal injury work is done on a contingency basis and we are very good at what we do. We offer a great service at a competitive price and we have achieved very good results for people. I will put our results against anyone. We are trial lawyers and we are not afraid to go to trial. Many lawyers don’t like to go to trial because it’s so expensive and time consuming, but we are very willing to take two or three weeks to go to trial if that is what it takes to get a favorable outcome for our client.” Hood personally handles about 20 to 25 cases annually and his firm handles between 250 to 300 cases per year.

They now have almost ten years of infrastructure and search engine optimization in place. He comments, “We created Facebook pages four years ago and started blogging two years ago. We also recently created a comprehensive website called ‘pharminjury.com’ that will be as robust as our main website. Hood and his firm have also been involved in a variety of charitable efforts over the years. While much of their philanthropy is done anonymously, they have worked with organizations such as, Feed the Hungry, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, and the NAACP. They also buy fans in the summer months for those that need them, provide turkeys and hams for a lot of people in the Rock Hill area during Thanksgiving and Christmas, and have helped a local children’s home. Hood recently completed his term as President of the South Carolina Association for Justice and now serves as the Immediate Past President of the organization. In this role he was able to work on a bill over the past year that was passed almost unanimously in the house and the senate which will make South Carolina a safer place for patients. Prior to being President, he held progressive positions within the organization including editor of the South Carolina Trial Lawyer Magazine, Treasurer, Secretary, Vice-President, Incoming President, President, and now holds the title of Immediate Past President which continues to carry responsibilities.

When tort reform is enacted it affects fundamental rights that we have been guaranteed for the past 200 years.
