Local hospitals

Following are a few hospitals in the same area. After a sexual assault, hospitals can administer a rape kit, which can help your case, should you choose to prosecute. We’ll describe how this process works in the next section.

This is only a partial list. To search for more hospitals, try the South Carolina Hospital Association Directory Map.

What is a rape kit?

design-element

A rape kit, also known as a sexual assault evidence kit or sexual assault forensic exam, is a collection of physical evidence gathered from a person who has experienced a sexual assault or rape. The purpose of a rape kit is to collect and preserve evidence that may be useful later in identifying and prosecuting the perpetrator.

The contents of a rape kit can vary depending on the jurisdiction and the specific needs of the case, but generally include items such as swabs to collect DNA evidence, containers for collecting clothing and other items, and documentation forms to record details about the assault and the collection of evidence.

The collection of evidence through a rape kit can be a traumatic experience for survivors of sexual assault, but it is a crucial step in holding perpetrators accountable for their actions and seeking justice for survivors. Many jurisdictions offer access to a sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE), who is specially trained to perform the exam and provide emotional support to survivors throughout the process. It is important to note that survivors have the right to consent or decline a rape kit exam and can receive medical care and support regardless of whether they choose to undergo an exam.

How does a rape kit work?

design-element

As mentioned earlier, a rape kit is typically administered by a specially trained medical professional, such as a sexual assault nurse examiner. The exam usually takes place in a private room at a hospital, clinic, or another medical facility.

The process of collecting evidence through a rape kit involves several steps, including:

  • Interview. The medical professional will start by asking you about your medical history and the details of the assault. This information will be recorded and can be used as evidence in a criminal investigation.
  • Physical exam. They will also conduct a thorough physical exam to look for injuries or other evidence of the assault. This may include taking swabs from your mouth, genitals, and other areas of the body to collect DNA evidence.
  • Clothing collection. You may be asked to remove and hand over your clothing, which will be placed in a paper bag to preserve any evidence.
  • Documentation. The nurse examiner will document all findings and collect other items, such as hair samples or fingernail clippings.
  • Follow-up care. You will also be offered follow-up medical care and counseling services to address any physical or emotional needs.

Once the exam is complete, the evidence collected in the rape kit will be sent to a crime lab for analysis. The results of the analysis may be used as evidence in a criminal trial and may help to identify the perpetrator of the assault. It is important to note you always have the right to decide whether or not to undergo a rape kit exam, and can receive medical care and support regardless of your decision.
